NEWMARKET is located in Rockingham County and was at one time the center of the New England shipping trade with the West Indies. The Town of Newmarket is located on the Lamprey River and Great Bay. It was started as a parish of Exeter and was granted full town privileges in 1737. It was named after the Town of Newmarket in Suffolk, England.

The first cotton textile mill began in 1823 as the Newmarket Manufacturing Company and would dominate the mill town’s waterfront and economy with seven textile mills harnessing water power from the falls. The company closed in 1929. The buildings today are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and have been converted into commercial and residential uses. Some of the residents are students and employees of the University of New Hampshire in the abutting town of Durham. Visitors and residents enjoy boating and fishing on the Lamprey and Great Bay tidal basin. The Stone Church built in 1834 is located on Zion’s Hill. This historic church has been converted into a restaurant with live entertainment.
