NEWINGTON is a town in Rockingham County. Originally a part of Dover, the settlers had disputes about the boundaries, thus the area became known as Bloody Point. In 1640 Trickey’s Ferry operated between Bloody Point and Hilton’s Point in Dover. The town was incorporated in 1764 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth. In 1794 a bridge was completed across Little Bay from Fox Point in Newington to the south bank of the Bellamy River in Dover.

In 1952 the House Armed Services Committee authorized acquiring by eminent domain large tracts of land to create Pease Air Force Base which opened in 1956. The base was closed in 1988, however the military personnel did not began leaving the base until 1990 and the base was officially closed in 1991. When the Air Force decided to leave the area NH State officials worked to get control of the land that was acquired by eminent domain. The state acquired 1,100 acres along Great Bay and Little Bay and is now called Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The area has several hiking trails and is a protected area for migratory birds and other wildlife.In the 1970’s and 1980’s commercial development has begun in Newington. With the Newington Mall opening in 1970 and later replaced by the Crossings at Fox Run in the early 2000’s. Newington is known for its high profile malls. It is also home to several large companies such as Tyco, Westinghouse, Sprague, Sea-3, Inc., Thermo Electrons and PSNH. Newington is one of the New Hampshire’s largest exporters of electricity.
