EXETER is a town in Rockingham County. Before the settlers arrived Exeter was home to the Squamscott Indians a sub-tribe of the Pennacook Nation. One of the four original townships; Exeter originally included Newmarket, Newfields, Brentwood, Epping and Fremont.

The town was incorporated in 1638. Edward Gilman, Jr. established the first sawmill in 1647 on the falls. Exeter suffered its last Indian raid in August of 1723 and by 1725 the tribes had left the area. In 1827, the Exeter Manufacturing Company was established along side of the river as it provided water power to produce cotton textiles. Other businesses manufactured shoes, saddles, harnesses, boxes, carriages and bicycles. In 1836 the last schooner was launched from Exeter and then in 1840 the Boston & Maine Railroad entered the town. The Gilman Garrison House is a National Historic Landmark and the American Independence Museum which were both former homes of the Gilman family. The Gilman family also donated the land on which Phillips Exeter Academy still stands today.
